Match the activity to the party
Guided snorkelling can flex for mixed confidence levels. Kayak and paddleboard require less preparation and work best in suitable, more protected water. Private diving needs certification history, equipment requirements and the operator’s medical screening.
Sailing instruction can suit guests who want a hands-on session. Kitesurfing, windsurfing and motorized activities require closer attention to age, previous experience, swimming ability and weather thresholds.

Define what private means
A private booking may provide a dedicated instructor, exclusive equipment, a private boat or a session reserved for the guest party. These are different products.
Ask whether transport or the activity area is shared, whether photography is included, where the briefing takes place and what happens when one guest stops early. Parallel options should share a clear start and finish so nobody spends the morning waiting.
Protected water has working rules
Dutch-side and French-side requirements differ. Operators should understand the marine park or reserve zones, current authorization and which activities are permitted in the intended area.
In the Man of War Shoal Marine Park, anchoring, fishing, feeding, touching or removing marine life are prohibited. Visiting divers need the applicable tags, and vessels using dive moorings must be registered with the Nature Foundation. The operator should explain how those rules affect the session.

Jet-ski rules change across the island
Dutch Sint Maarten regulates watersports operators and personal watercraft through local rules, including licensing and operating conditions. On French Saint-Martin, jet skis are prohibited throughout the Réserve Naturelle, including around Pinel Island.
Confirm the exact operating zone and current restrictions before booking, and use an authorized operator. Sea Grapes can help coordinate the plan, but the local authorities set and enforce the rules.
Build the complete guest sequence
Allow time for transport, waivers, fitting equipment, the safety briefing, showers or changing and the return. Towels, dry clothing, hydration and a simple lunch often matter more after the session than another attraction.
Set the hard return before departure. The operator should know about any yacht timing that cannot move.
Use an activity-specific alternative
High wind may stop paddling while supporting a coached wind session; poor visibility may affect snorkelling while leaving a lagoon activity workable.
The replacement should still suit active guests. Passive sightseeing is rarely an equal substitute for someone who planned a morning in the water.

What works for a group with mixed abilities?
Use parallel options with a shared return. Casual participants might snorkel or kayak while experienced guests dive, sail or take a coached windsport session.
Can a beginner try scuba diving?
A qualified operator may offer a supervised introductory experience, subject to age, medical and swimming requirements. It should not be treated as an unscreened add-on.
Does private mean the water is exclusive?
No. The instructor, equipment or boat may be private while the sea and public activity area remain shared. Confirm the exact product.
Can guests use the yacht’s own equipment?
That is an operational decision for the captain, crew, insurer and current local rules. Sea Grapes can coordinate the shore-side provider.
Can guests take a jet ski to Pinel Island?
