First identify what changed. A passing shower, high surf and a tropical alert need different responses. Once the captain and operator set their limits, rebuild the guest day around those decisions.

Read the condition before replacing the plan

A brief shower may only need a later start or closer pickup. Heat and humidity may call for less exposed walking and an earlier active element. Wind, swell or high surf can move a water day onto land.

Heavy rain, flooding, thunderstorms or a tropical alert require official guidance and the captain’s instructions. Conditions at one coast do not establish what is happening everywhere else.

Keep four backup formats ready

A food-led alternative can replace the beach with a longer lunch, tasting or early dinner. A culture-and-shopping route can use Philipsburg or Marigot when conditions still support short outdoor transfers.

A wellness or recovery day may suit guests who have already had several active days. For families, use a shorter attraction or sheltered lunch with the vehicle close and an early return available.

  • Food-led: long lunch or planned tasting
  • Culture-led: compact town route with a driver
  • Recovery: spa, salon or quiet table
  • Family: short attraction and easy return

Prepare Plan B before guests need it

For every weather-dependent day, hold one alternative that matches the group. Record the latest activation time, deposit, cancellation cutoff and transport change it requires.

Once the captain and shore team agree, present one revised plan with timing, clothing and departure point. Do not show guests ten ideas that have already failed.

Season is context, not a forecast

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June through 30 November, but those dates do not predict conditions for a particular call. A winter beach day can have poor sea conditions, while a summer day may remain suitable.

Use the Meteorological Department St Maarten for the local public forecast, radar, advisories and seasonal outlook; use National Hurricane Center products for tropical systems. A screenshot from the previous evening is context, not the current decision.

If conditions improve, do not revive the original activity without a fresh check from the captain, operator and relevant authority.

Planning list

Activate the second plan cleanly

  • Current official forecast and warnings reviewed
  • Captain’s movement instructions understood
  • Operator status confirmed directly
  • Guest heat, mobility and respiratory needs considered
  • Plan B availability checked
  • Cancellation and deposit deadlines recorded
  • Driver and venue informed of the revised route
  • Guests given one clear update

Questions that change the plan

Settle these first.

Does rain cancel the whole day?

Not always. A brief shower may only change timing. Heavy rain, flooding, thunderstorms or official warnings require a different response.

Which weather source should planners use?

Use the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten and official warnings, alongside the captain’s operational information. During tropical activity, also follow National Hurricane Center products.

When is Atlantic hurricane season?

The official season runs from 1 June through 30 November. Tropical systems can occur outside those dates, and the season does not predict one day’s conditions.

Can Sea Grapes rearrange the day at short notice?

Yes. Sea Grapes can coordinate available alternatives, transport, reservations and guest-facing changes. Supplier availability and cancellation terms still apply.

Ready to plan it?

Keep a second plan ready.

Send the original itinerary, guest priorities and decision deadline. Sea Grapes can prepare a suitable alternative and activate the transport, reservations and activities when conditions change.
