Start with the vessel’s dimensions, then the work list. Great Bay avoids a lagoon transit; Simpson Bay Lagoon brings the yacht closer to marinas and shore services but adds bridge and channel constraints.
Separate access, berth and service approvals
Published lagoon limits do not confirm that a particular yacht can make the passage or use a given berth. Port St Maarten lists general access dimensions, but channel conditions, the yacht’s arrival state and the facility may impose lower limits. Work to the lowest applicable figure and get written acceptance.
Check access separately from berth fit and utilities. Shore power, fendering, security, fuel, waste, contractor access and guest movements can be decisive even when the dimensions appear workable.
When Great Bay belongs on the shortlist
Great Bay offers direct sea access without a Simpson Bay Bridge transit. Port St Maarten currently publishes 6.5 metres alongside the 65-metre Windjammer West berth and the 100-metre Windjammer North berth, with Pier 2 available in some circumstances. These figures are a first screen only; written acceptance, traffic, depth alongside and service access still need to be settled for the yacht.
Great Bay may suit a yacht outside the lagoon limits or one that cannot risk a bridge-dependent departure. Exposure, tender operations and the work list still need to be checked for that yacht.
When the lagoon may fit the call
The lagoon concentrates marinas, yards, contractors and yacht-support businesses. That can reduce travel between jobs, but arrival and departure remain tied to bridge movements and the route to the allocated berth.
Port St Maarten publishes general lagoon access figures of 56 feet or 17 metres maximum beam and 17 feet or 5 metres draft. They do not certify passage. Current depth, the yacht’s actual arrival condition, bridge instructions and the receiving marina may produce a lower practical limit.
Compare the whole call: dimensions, forecast, bridge timing, shore power, bunkering, waste reception, engineering access, airport transfers, guest privacy and the latest acceptable departure. Convenience in one area should not hide a critical constraint in another.
